From the ground

This grows wild, and looks a bit like lamb's ears.
While kneeling on the ground to take pictures a few weeks back, I snapped two that led me to the idea for this post:  the view from the ground.

That's it. That's the theme.

I don't usually take the time to look at the world from the ground level, but it does provide not only a different perspective on things higher, but a closer look at things lower.

So without further ado, here are some views from the ground on the hill.

These well-worn boots decorate the new rock garden out front.
Periodically Iris the dog decides they need a good gnaw, and drags them away.

Don't get excited - it's just a cow bone. Tropical sage (Salvia coccinea) is behind.
"Go away go away go away."
Blackfoot daisies (Melampodium leucanthum), Manfreda maculosa (I think)
and fallen cenizo  blooms (Leucophyllum frutescens).

My perfect native groundcover: straggler daisy or horseherb (Calyptocarpus vialis).
Fruits of fall labors - dead Ashe junipers cut into stove-sized pieces.

  1. Hey, these pictures are really cool! Why not a picture of you observing and choosing your shots at ground level? Where's that assistant when you need her? My favorite is the cow bone picture, the tropical sage looks like a tall bush. Good job oh creative one.

    1. Thank you, mysterious reader! Yes, that assistant is never around when I need her. Oh wait, I don't have one. Darn it.

    2. What! No assistant? What happened? She was assisting you in Aug 2011. Can't get good help these days, ya better try to get her back on the payroll. (I heard she is good on outdoor excursions, even known to put a leach on her nose for the cause)

    3. Ah, that assistant, the ever adventurous tween! She's busy at school these days . . .

  2. Good post. It's good to look at things from a different angle, every once in a while.

  3. Great pictures, Cynthia! I hope someone in your neck of the woods will identify that little lambs ear like plant! It is really very cool looking at this stage. Keep photographing it as it matures so we can see the flower. Yes, your tropical sage and the pretty blue morning glory make a stunning picture--along with the cow bone, of course. Very nice!

Couldn't agree more about the perfect ground cover! What would I do without it and frog fruit? Keep up the good work. Getting close to the ground is a good thing to do!

  4. I like the rocks a lot. The bone, well maybe I could get used to it. Seems like the dog might go for it before the boot but there's no accounting for dogs. I've been thinking of making some movies from the perspective of a Six Inch Tall Man, so I especially appreciate your theme here.
